A guide to Eid al-Adha celebrations in Dubai

All you need to know about this important celebration in Dubai

Eid al-Adha marks the end of the end of Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca – one of the most important religious observances in Islam. The celebration is the second largest religious holiday celebrated by Muslims annually, after Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is a holiday at the end of the Hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, which is one of the greatest religious observances in Islam.

Eid al-Adha is also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice, which remembers the prophet Ibrahim (also known as ‘Abraham’), who was commanded by God to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. Demonstrating unwavering loyalty to God, Ibrahim obeyed, but an angel stopped him and gave him a ram to sacrifice in place of his son.

What is the Hajj?

In the period before Eid al-Adha, many Muslims travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, where the final destination is the holy city of Mecca, home of the Kaaba – the most sacred site in Islam. Muslims may plan and save for many years to enable them to take part in this event, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha?

Many Muslims make a special effort to pray and listen to a sermon at a mosque. They also spend time with family and friends across the two days of celebration (September 22 to 23 this year). Muslims are obliged to share food and money with the poor so that they can take part in the celebrations.
