Dubai essentials

With great weather all year round, and fantastic entertainment and attractions, it's no wonder millions of travellers choose to stop in Dubai each year. Whether you're new to the emirate or returning, here is some information to help you plan your holiday.

Currency: UAE dirham. US$1 = AED 3.67.

Time: GMT + 4.

Vaccinations: Travellers are not required to have any special injections prior to arrival.

Language: Arabic is the official language in Dubai, though English is widely spoken. Restaurant menus, road signs and other information is usually presented in both English and Arabic, so visitors will have no trouble getting around.

Cultural consideration: Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, where Islam is the official state religion. Visitors are advised to dress modestly when around town, particularly in traditional areas and around the malls, and especially during the season of Ramadan. Swimwear is perfectly acceptable at pools and beaches, though not outside these areas.

Weather: Dubai enjoys a year-round tropical desert climate. Winter day temperatures average between 23 and 25 degrees Celcius, while summers are hot and humid with average day temperatures between 42 and 45 degrees Celcius. Visitors arriving in summer months are advised to take extra care to stay hydrated during the day and to take full advantage of the many indoor activities on offer during the season.

Safety: Dubai has a very low crime rate and travellers are advised to exercise normal safety precautions when visiting.
