  • Glorious cheese and wine?
I had been really excited about wine and cheese at CafeM after hearing rave reviews from some friends last year. Unfortunately, our night was ruined by a combination of false advertising, misinformed staff and a rather insolent manager. My friend called and booked a table about two weeks ago. I then called twice more and spoke to two different members of staff to check that we could use The Entertainer vouchers named 'main course' for the wine and cheese nights. I also commented on the fact the voucher only seemed to have a value of 60+dhs and asked again if they were sure. Both times I was told 'yes of course, do not worry that it says that. You can use the vouchers for wine and cheese'. I was even told that I could only use 3 vouchers per table so I made sure our booking was for 6 people. At no point in any of these 3 phone calls were we informed that Wednesday's are fondue and wine only (no cheese boards or other options). This is also not conveyed on their website. We arrived at the venue on time for our 7pm reservation and immediately noticed that there was no cheese to be seen! Upon inquiring with the servers we were reassured that our cheese would be bought to the table - again no mention of fondue night. The 'wine and cheese night' was meant to run for 3 hours and 30 minutes in we got our first glass of wine. 40 minutes in we got 1 pot of fondue between 6 people, and another only after we requested it since not everyone could reach. The fondue itself was tasty but not really hot enough, however we were happy to be eating. One of the servers then came to ask if we would now like our chocolate fondue - this was our first indication that we had actually booked a fondue and wine night! We explained this to the manager and showed her the website which does not mention this fact. The manager said she would speak to marketing and we were thankful when she arranged for a plate of cheese and crackers to be sent through from the kitchen. At this point one cheese fondue was placed on our table and one chocolate so I asked for the chocolate (that we had said no to) to be taken away so that we could have more cheese. Our glasses were refilled and we began to enjoy our evening, until we were ready for dessert and ordered a chocolate fondue. One of the servers then proceeded to bad-mouth us to the others so close to our table that my friend actually had to stop our conversation and ask them to move away! Finally, when the bill came one of the servers asked if we had any Entertainer vouchers and we got them up only to be told that the vouchers could not be accepted. We called over the manager once again to explain the situation and our upset. We made clear that we understood this was not the servers fault nor hers, but all staff should have an understanding of the conditions and clearly didn't even know the wine and cheese vouchers had been removed from The Entertainer. The manager simply said we could not use the voucher, took no responsibility for the fact her staff had been misinformed and were therefore misinforming customers and then...walked away from our table mid-sentence!!! I have never, ever had or heard of a manager doing such a thing. I had booked this evening on the premise of using vouchers since I had a friend visiting and now she would have to pay full price for what had been an utterly disappointing night. Undoubtedly my worst experience of Dubai hospitality.

  • False advertising at cheese and wine night
Before you read my review, let me give you some context. I'm a resident who has lived in Dubai 4 years now and I have never written one of these things and trust me I've done my fair share of brunches and restaurants. I visited cafe M in the past on 3 occasions and I was booking a table of 6 for the cheese and wine night as a friend of my girlfriend was coming out from the UK so wanted them to have a special time. I looked around on Google and saw the attached advert that promised 'cheese fest and wine Tues-Thursday' and thought that would be perfect. I rang the hotel a total of 3 times in the end to confirm my booking as people wanted in and dropped out and every time asked them if my entertainer voucher was valid (it's a Dubai thing) and the answer was 'yes'.  My friends and I arrived and we were concerned to see there was no cheese on display/ available and just normal cafe set up. After a while we pressed one of the waiters who didn't speak much English and said he would bring the wine and cheese. After 40 mins we finally got some fondue (tasty) then expecting more cheese we were offered a chocolate fondue. Very confused we asked the manager who told us Wednesday was fondue night. After a bit of conflab and me showing her the false advertising on the website (attached previously) she eventually agreed to give us a selection of cheese's and fruit. Attached is my second picture, a chalk board drawing on the pillar as you walk in clearly stating cheese wine fruits etc.. then as unfortunately anticipated by the wiser members of the group when the bill arrived there was no mention of the entertainer vouchers (promised 50% discount) after a heated discussion with the manager telling us the vouchers are not valid, even though her staff had promised us this over the phone on the 3 separate occasions. Also the manager literally walked away from us during conversation... we were now faced with a full price bill of 199aed per person + Vat (5%). So a potentially nice evening turned into a night of constant bickering with staff and quite stressful confrontations. My advice is only come here on a Thursday as the rest of the week is not up to par even though they charge the same price. A very disappointed, and not returning customer. Thanks but no thanks Media one x

  • Cheese and Wine
We were looking for cheese and wine and we weren’t disappointed. Offers a good selection of wines, including Rose and the option the add Prosecco. The cheese board is plentiful, and refillable. All staff were pleasant and available to keep our glasses full. We will definitely be back!
