Visiting during Ramadan? Here's what you need to know

During Ramadan, eating, drinking (including water), smoking and listening to music in public is not allowed between sunrise and sunset. However, many dining spots remain open for non-Muslims, particularly in shopping malls and hotels. Read our guide to the holy month to know more about this important time of year.

Can I drink water during Ramadan in Dubai?

To be respectful to those who are fasting, you are expected refrain from drinking water in public. The same applies to chewing gum. Children, pregnant women, the elderly and those suffering from illness are exempt, but it is recommended to consume food and drink in private.

When does everybody eat in Ramadan?

During the holy month, Muslims eat between the hours of sunset and sunrise, so it’s fine to enjoy a meal in public during this time. Muslims break their fast with family and friends over the evening meal, known as iftar. This is followed by suhoor, which is a meal taken very early in the morning (before dawn).

Join the community and participate in the local traditions by visiting the city's many iftar and suhoor tents, which can be found at most leading hotels in the city.

During the day, however, there are plenty of dining options for non-Muslims to enjoy.

Where should I go for daytime dining in Ramadan?

Many leading malls including The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates cater to non-Muslims during Ramadan, with food courts concealing those dining from the view of passers-by. Most malls also extend their opening hours to accommodate different eating times.

A lot of restaurants and cafes across the city also serve breakfast and lunch during the day, so ask your hotel concierge for recommendations.
