Taking pride of place in Downtown, Dubai Opera boasts an ever-expanding lineup from ballet and magic shows to musicals and, of course, opera. There’s a show for every taste and age range. Janus Rostock – the architect behind this masterpiece – designed the building in a dhow-shape in homage to the city’s seafaring past. Post-show, enjoy a meal at the experiential restaurant, The Loft at Dubai Opera.
Dubai’s most recent addition to the entertainment scene, Coca-Cola Arena, is a popular draw and promises an exciting line-up of events all through the year. It’s off to a great start too, with opening months seeing performances by pop rock band Maroon 5, global comedian Russell Peters and motivational speaker Tony Robbins. From international concerts to sporting events, this 17,000-seat, air-conditioned arena is the new home of entertainment in city.
Created by the legendary Franco Dragone, La Perle is Dubai’s first aqua-based show and delights visitors with death-defying acrobatic stunts and a mesmerising storyline. The cleverly-engineered stage at Al Habtoor City remains an attraction in itself, concealing a gigantic pool beneath the floor that holds 2.7 million litres of water. Dragone refers to La Perle as the most technically advanced theatre production he’s ever produced. Make a night of it by enjoying a post-show dinner nearby.
Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival
Having offered Dubai over 17 editions, the Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival takes place every winter at the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre, and brings with it some of the biggest names in the world of pop, indie, rock, reggae and, of course, jazz. Expect sell-out crowds for all three days as previous acts included the likes of Santana, Mariah Carey and Sting. Not just about the music, the Jazz Festival is a family-friendly event, with a variety of activities and activities organised.
Middle East Film and Comic Con
The annual Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) is the largest and only pop culture celebration in the region. The event, held every April, gives visitors the chance to dress up and become their favourite fantasy character and features the best of art, comics, movies, games, anime and more. Expect live Q&A panels with sci-fi stars – the likes of Gillian Anderson and William Shatner have attended in the past – celebrity meet and greets, competitions, interactive shows and plenty of themed entertainment.
