It might be short and sweet, but an overnight stopover in Dubai should be far from boring. There's plenty to see in half a day, depending on your interests, the time of year and what part of the city you're visiting. Here's a guide to catching some of Dubai's highlights on a tight schedule.

New Dubai

Where to stay

As well as decent rates, a fresh vibe and late check-out, Rove Downtown Dubai is as central as it gets. Located a short stroll from The Dubai Mall, Dubai Opera and Burj Khalifa, this hip Downtown Dubai stay has a rooftop pool offering epic views, and suits those who like to explore on foot.

What to do

Jump on a ByKy bicycle at one of the automated stations on the expansive Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard and take in Downtown Dubai's glossy skyline and glistening lakes. Then, sample modern Arabic bites at Zahr El-Laymoun in Souk Al Bahar, overlooking the dancing Dubai Fountain. Afterwards, stroll over to The Dubai Mall to get a glimpse of the sharks inside Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo or gaze up at the majestic Burj Khalifa.

Old Dubai

Where to stay

It may have more of a business-travel slant, but Hilton Dubai Creek is one of the best launch pads for exploring Old Dubai. Located in Deira, with vistas overlooking the historic Dubai Creek, the hotel is just a 10-minute drive from the airport and close to the city's souks.

What to do

Ride an abra (water taxi) across the Creek and wander around Dubai's oldest and most historic area, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Visit the Dubai Museum before refuelling at courtyard-style XVA Café inside the XVA Art Hotel in the gallery hub. Then, head back over to the Deira side of the Creek to buy vacuum-sealed packs of premium saffron at the Spice Souk.

Summer-friendly

Where to stay

For an easy, breezy summer stopover, Sheraton Dubai Mall of the Emirates is the place to stay. Connected to one of the city's most well-equipped malls, it offers quick access to Ski Dubai, the Gold & Diamond Park and some of the best fashion shopping in the city.

What to do

There's plenty to fit in at the Mall of the Emirates: ride a chairlift or carve up the slope at indoor snow park Ski Dubai. Enjoy a gourmet lunch and the latest blockbuster at the ultra-luxury Theatre by Rhodes at VOX Cinemas, featuring a menu by British Michelin-starred chef, Gary Rhodes (try the foie gras panini). Splash some cash on threads at NYC's Alice + Olivia, then splurge on well-priced jewellery at the nearby Gold & Diamond Park, a short cab ride away.

Outdoors

Where to stay

Overlooking the iconic Burj Al Arab and dazzling Arabian Gulf, beachside resort Mina A’Salam offers the type of space you never want to leave. But free entry to the adjacent Wild Wadi Waterpark and easy access to Jumeirah, home to some of the city's best beaches, will more than certainly pry you away.

What to do

Spend a few hours plummeting down the slides at Wild Wadi Waterpark, then jump in a cab and head over to Kite Beach in Jumeirah 3. Popular with fitness fiends, Dukite offers a range of watersports, including stand-up paddleboarding and kitesurfing. For lunch, snack on cheeseburgers at food truck-turned beach shack, Salt.

Getting to and from the airport

Most areas in Dubai are within a 35-minute drive from the airport. Old Dubai and Downtown Dubai are approximately 10 to 15 minutes away from Dubai International (DXB), while Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim 3 can be reached in a short 25-minute drive. If possible, avoid rush hour between 7am and 9am and 4pm and 7pm on weekdays (Sunday - Thursday). Many hotels also arrange airport transfers for a fee, but rides booked through on-demand car service, Careem, are cheaper and easy to track.
