May ushers in Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. During this period, Muslims around the world refrain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset, practising self-reflection, charity and spiritual renewal. In Dubai, the month is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour, and evenings are spent feasting with loved ones. Special occasions, family-friendly events and a spirit of togetherness shed a different light on the city. Many elaborate iftars (the fast-breaking meal) are hosted around town, with the Dubai Opera a favourite this season.
