From souks to spa treatments, Dubai’s golden experiences.
Decadent spa treatments, gold souk shopping, glittering desserts and more
There’s a reason Dubai is nicknamed the City of Gold. As well as the golden sands, there’s the Gold Souk, gold vending machines, gold facials and even desserts adorned in edible gold.
Where to shop for gold in Dubai
The Gold Souk in Dubai
The Gold Souk is one of the largest gold markets in the world. Reminiscent of an old Arabian bazaar, huge wooden gates open to narrow cobblestone alleys lined with some 400 shops. It’s estimated that 10 tonnes of gold weighs down the market at any one time. Bracelets, bangles, rings, earrings, and dramatic neckpieces reflect their country of inspiration: delicate, lacy 18-carat Italian designs; 24- and 22-carat Indian masterpieces; diamond-encrusted ornaments and strings of pearls evoking European royalty.
Gold and Diamond Park
The more modern Gold and Diamond Park on Sheikh Zayed Road (FGB Metro Station, if you’re catching Dubai Metro) is air-conditioned and boasts marble-clad interiors. Its 90-odd shops tempt with rare and luxurious designs and craftspeople ready to create a piece of bespoke jewellery.
Did you know?
In 1999, during the Dubai Shopping Festival, the world’s longest gold chain was created - measuring 4.2km. The 22-carat gold chain was sold in necklace and bracelet lengths to 9,600 people.
Gold leaf desserts, drinks, and spa treatments in Dubai
The gold keeps on coming. Here are just some of the ways to be burnished!
If you’re feeling thirsty (with heavy pockets), why not try Elixia – the 24-carat gold infused lemonade at Milk and Honey, Palm Jumeirah? Or for the serious coffee lover, there’s the Palace Cappuccino – topped with 22-carat gold dust – at Al Bayt Lounge, The Palace Downtown Dubai.
If that doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, you may be interested in the Black Diamond ice-cream cone at Scoopi Cafe, Jumeirah Beach Road. Blending a Madagascan vanilla base with strands of Iranian saffron and slices of Italian black truffle, the indulgent treat is garnished with 23-carat edible gold leaf and served in a Versace dish.
Gold is also purported to have an astonishing rejuvenating effect on the skin, as a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory benefits. See the results for yourself with a 24-karat gold facial at the Kaya Skin Clinic in Town Centre Mall; Talise Ottoman Spa at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray; or the Egyptian Gold treatment at Raffles Spa at Raffles Dubai hotel – all of which will have you feeling like Cleopatra in no time.
For those who’d rather wear their riches, make a bee-line for the Dubai Mall’s incredible Level Shoe District and seek out a pair of 24-carat gold shoes by Alberto Moretti.
If all that sounds a bit excessive, it’s possible to experience the golden side of Dubai without spending a cent. Simply head to the opulent lobby of the Burj Al Arab where – as well as ultra-modern sculptures, scores of lush green plants and imported Italian marble – you’ll find 2000 m2 of 22-carat gold leaf detailing.
