Dubai hosts ICCA Middle East International Meetings Forum
26 May, 2016
Dubai hosted the inaugural ICCA Middle East International Meetings Forum from 18-19 May 2016. The Forum was the first of an annual event for ICCA members and meetings industry stakeholders in the Middle East, designed to raise awareness about the value of international meetings for destinations, venues, PCO/DMCs and other suppliers across the region.
The event brought together more than 180 industry stakeholders from across the region as well as meeting planners from major international associations who shared their insights and experiences on how the Middle East can increase its share of the global meetings market. Topics included key industry trends, teamwork, bidding for international meetings, and how industry suppliers can accommodate the requirements of international meeting planners.
Key speakers included Martin Sirk, CEO of ICCA; Christine Trimmer, Executive Director, World Obesity Association; Mariska van der Veen, Executive General Manager, World Glaucoma Association; and Eric Bakermans, Manager Meetings & Conventions, Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions.
As part of Dubai Business Events and Dubai’s bid and subsequential win of the 2018 ICCA Congress, the Forum was established and marks the first steps on the journey towards the 2018 event, preparing the region to take complete advantage when 1,000 of the world’s top meetings experts will converge on Dubai.
Martin Sirk, CEO, ICCA, said: “The Middle East is growing at a rapid pace and establishing this forum gives us the opportunity to connect the region with our global network of practitioners, allowing for knowledge sharing and understanding the needs of the meetings business in a deeper way. Ahead of the ICCA Congress coming to Dubai in 2018, we want to ensure that we build up interest and capacity together with our local members and partners in the region over the next two years.”
