An opportunity to savour a fascinating city wide experience

The month of Ramadan, is an opportunity to promote cross-cultural understanding and provide insight into the month of reflection. Headlined by glorious Ramadan tents, the bustling Night Market and the invigorating Dubai Sports World, there are plenty of other activities to educate and enlighten visitors – and best of all, they’re free to attend!

Here are some of the highlights to mark in your calendar during the Holy Month:

Dubai International Holy Quran Award (Dihqa)

The 20th edition of this annual award is a platform for rich cultural programs. The Quran memorisation competition, open to participants from across the Muslim world, is the gold standard in international Holy Quran contests worldwide and undoubtedly one of the most popular Ramadan events. A series of lectures from notable Islamic scholars highlight the values and teachings of Islam making it a great opportunity to learn more about the religion and its spiritual culture.

When: First to the 20th day of Ramadan, at 10.30pm daily

Dubai Ramadan Forum 2016

To learn about the Islamic faith, local tradition and culture, head to Dubai World Trade Centre for the 15th edition of the Dubai Ramadan Forum. The line-up of events includes daily lectures presented by well-known preachers on relevant social and religious issues. The lectures are available in Arabic, English, Urdu, Malayalam, Tagalog and Bengali, and everyone is invited to participate.

Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament

This annual sports event has become one of the most popular spectator events of Ramadan in Dubai. Participation is open to the public and events include paddle tennis, archery, volleyball, futsal, cycling and track competitions. Competitions are open to the public, and include women-only competitions. Participants are required to pre-register.

Ramadan Night Market

Ten exciting days of entertainment and incredible shopping offers just in time for Eid in Dubai. This shopping bazaar focuses on featuring branded merchadise from retailers across the region. A food court, a Grand Arabic themed Majlis, an exclusive Henna Painting section and ‘Play and Win’ areas are just some of the the other attractions. Little ones have a dedicated play area area to themselves while you spend the evening stocking your trolley. Watch out for the daily prizes to be won!

Ramadan Reciters

Placing the spotlight firmly on reflection during the Holy Month, a series of activities will be conducted aimed at helping Muslims better practice Islam over Ramadan. The sermons will be broadcast live and several well-known reciters from around the globe will lead the Taraweeh and Tahajjud prayers during the Holy month.

Huboob Al Khair

Prominent preachers and scholars of Islamic faith will deliver awareness and recite the Holy Quran as part of the third edition of the ‘Huboob Al Khair’ programme. The programme is held under the patronage of Shaikha Hind Bint Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Zayed Humanitarian Day

The 19th day of Ramadan is designated as Zayed Humanitarian Day across the UAE.

In honour of the 12th death anniversary of the founder of the nation, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the day is marked by charitable activities.

The day aims to remind residents of the importance of humanitarian initiatives and extending help to the world’s less fortunate to alleviate the suffering of those affected by conflict and natural disasters.

Dubai Sports World

Developing the mind and body are an integral part of Ramadan and sporting pursuits during this 10 week schedule serve to develop discipline while having fun. Choose from rugby, football, basketball, tennis, futsal, volleyball, badminton, squash, gym, skate boarding, BMX bike riding, table tennis and more. Rent a court or pitch and get your friends and colleagues together for some fast-paced and exciting indoor sport action.

UEFA Euro Cup

Coinciding with 3 weeks of Ramadan, the UEFA European Football Championship is one of most widely followed sport tournaments in Dubai. Catch all the football action across various venues in the city as you relax with friends and family, after a sumptuous Iftar.

This is a social media series shaped by artists and designers and their personal reflections of Ramadan. These personal and artistic interpretations highlight shared experiences of the holy month by artistically exploring recognisable elements such as the Ramadan series, the Iftar table, or being on one's best behavior.

Ahmed Bouhoulaigah, Fatima Albudoor, Amal al Khaja, Sara al Haddad, Jumairy, Khalid Mezaina, Salama Nasib, Dina Saadi, Safwan Subzwari, and Walid al Wawi are the featured artists this year.
