Things to do in Bur Dubai

Next to Dubai Creek, this collection of perfectly preserved buildings, featuring striking wind towers and peaceful shaded courtyards, is a highlight of Bur Dubai. As you explore Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and see what life was like in Dubai more than a century ago, make time for the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding – and don’t miss the Coffee Museum and the excellent XVA Gallery’s café too.

Not far from Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is one of Dubai’s traditional markets, known as souks. The Textile Souk is a great place to explore, even if you don’t buy anything. Along with almost every fabric and material imaginable, you’ll also find skilled tailors and artisans who can create bespoke outfits – plus plenty of stalls selling other interesting items.

Another not-to-be-missed shopping centre, Meena Bazaar is a far cry from Dubai’s modern malls, and offers a great experience for visitors. Known as “Little India”, Meena Bazaar is packed with traders selling everything from textiles and jewellery to gold and craft items. Search for some special souvenirs to take home, or just enjoy the ambience of this centre for trade and commerce.

Dubai may be a surprising place to find an icon of ocean-going luxury, but the world-famous liner Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) has become a permanent fixture at Port Rashid Marina, where it operates as a floating hotel. There’s no need to book a room to explore the ship – its many restaurants and lounges are open to all, and you can find events such as concerts, plays or live comedy in the vessel’s ballrooms.

Set alongside Dubai Creek, this museum tells the story of the UAE through state-of-the-art exhibits and fascinating items from preceding centuries. Track Dubai’s progress from tiny fishing village to global metropolis with the 'Birth of a City' multimedia experience, and explore the rich artistry of Emirati fragrances at The Perfume House.

Step into AYA’s sprawling 40,000 square foot space and find yourself in another world – or several worlds, with 12 distinct zones telling different stories. High-tech graphics, sound and lighting create these fantastical universes, making family-friendly AYA at Wafi Mall a brilliant place to spend some time.

Located in Al Seef next to Dubai Creek, the Museum of Illusions contains more than 60 perplexing oddities to trick your eyes and brain. Not only is it fun, the museum is also educational, explaining how illusions work and the principles behind them – making it an ideal family activity.

Once you’ve finished hoodwinking your brain with illusions, make time to explore the rest of Al Seef. Located directly next to Dubai Creek, you’ll find dozens of restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy the waterside views. Al Seef is also one of the city’s heritage areas, blending traditional architecture with modern shopping and dining options.

Stretching along Dubai Creek, this beautiful park is one of the largest green spaces in the city, making it a perfect destination to stretch your legs and enjoy the outdoors. To make a day of it, pack a picnic or bring items to grill at one of the park's free-to-use barbecue spots. After lunch, explore the botanical gardens or let your kids have fun in the free play areas.

One of the very best activities in Bur Dubai actually takes you away from the neighbourhood: the abra creek crossing, where for only AED1 you can catch a traditional boat to Deira. The crossing only takes a few minutes, but the experience and view – the best you’ll get of Dubai Creek – make it unmissable. If you want more time on an abra, you can also hire one for a private tour at an hourly rate, making it a great option to see more of Dubai from the water.
