Looking back at the best of the city’s foodie season
The 2019 edition of Dubai Food Festival – the city’s annual celebration of everything gastronomic – took place between 21 February to 9 March. From shining a spotlight on hidden gems across the city to offering once-in-a-lifetime dining experiences, there was much to be savoured. Here are our favourite festival highlights.

SPECIAL THREE-COURSE MENUS

Dubai Restaurant Week gave foodies the opportunity to enjoy exclusively curated three-course set menus at the city’s best restaurants. Showcasing the city’s creative food scene, there was plenty on offer. From flavour-packed South American cuisine at Andes, a culinary road trip through Italy at GIA and carnivorous delights at Beefbar – top restaurants whipped up spectacular plates to impress, all for the unbelievable price of AED199.

MASTERCLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND FEASTS

The inaugural edition of Foodie Experiences cooked up a storm this year, giving all a unique insight into the city’s culinary dynamism. Enthusiasts had over 20 curated experiences to choose from, including masterclasses with top chefs, themed tours, workshops with nutritionists, exclusive tasting menus from the finest restaurants in Dubai and so much more. Highlights included a charming afternoon tea on the bow of the QE2, a Brazilian-style culinary carnival at Atlantis, The Palm, and a 14-course, two-chef pop-up at Trèsind Studio.

AL FRESCO FUN FOR ALL

The swyp Beach Canteen transformed a stretch of beach into a culinary hotspot throughout Dubai Food Festival, showcasing the wealth of homegrown concepts from across the UAE. Visitors to this beachside fiesta sampled dishes from around the world – from Polish street food to quirky desserts. Kuwait National Day was celebrated with great zest and zeal, while Arabesque enhanced the offerings with a live show starring musicians SAMA Quartet, Mahdi Baccouch and ADONIS, as well as comic Wonho Chung. There was also plenty of live cooking demos and entertainment, making this year's swyp Beach Canteen an uncontested foodie favourite

WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY?

The return of the citywide Dine & Win programme gave foodies the chance to win big. Visitors who dined at participating restaurants received scratch cards or raffle tickets with incredible prizes up for grabs, including Zomato Gold memberships, diamond jewellery and even a Nissan Patrol to drive home. At Mall of the Emirates, diners could earn cash or coupons worth up to AED5,000 every day, while Dubai Festival City Mall gave away tickets to the latest blockbusters films.

During the Dubai Food Festival, everyone was invited to vote for their favourite budget venues, shining a well-deserved spotlight on the city’s lesser-known food treasures. The top 10 eateries, including Bait Al Mandi, MTR 1924 and Asian5, also offered special menus for up to AED35, winning new fans.

SPECIAL COFFEE BLENDS ACROSS TOWN

Dubai’s coffeehouses whipped up limited-time blends and brews influenced by the culinary creativity taking over town. Homegrown favourite Saddle Cafe served a creamy Pistachio Latte, Cupagahwa crafted a locally-inspired Saffron Latte, and international chain Costa Coffee introduced the Superfood Charcoal Latte to health fans. From Al Quoz to Zabeel, the city’s trendiest cafes came through with a special caffeine treat you couldn’t miss.

FOODIE EVENTS FOR THE FAMILY

Dubai Food Festival didn’t just thrive inside restaurants and cafes. Spots across the city went all out with exciting celebrations themed around food. City Walk hosted a cook-off between chefs, while City Centre Mirdif brought all the fun to The Great Outdoors, where families could enjoy food kiosks and thrilling activities. At Mercato Mall, visitors discovered a carnival of delights featuring acrobatics, comedy and, of course, delicious cuisine. The Pointe, Al Seef, The Beach at JBR and even Last Exit – every destination brought something special to the table.
