Al Shindagha Museum

Discover culture by the Creek
Set amidst the historic waters of the Dubai Creek, the newly opened Al Shindagha Museum tells the proud story of our nation’s past and reverent traditions.

Make your way down to Al Shindagha Museum’s 'Dubai Creek: Birth of a City', a state-of-the-art multimedia experience, guiding visitors through the area’s dramatic development over centuries. The carefully-curated tour features interactive videos, touch displays and historic photographs and artefacts so visitors can gain insight into what it was like for Emiratis to raise a family by the waterways, and how maritime trade affected their livelihoods.

The rich, immersive tour features sections dedicated to governance and society, living off the sea and land, and creativity and wellbeing. There’s even a special Children’s Pavilion for little ones to learn more about the nation’s heritage, with hands-on exhibits and fun traditional Emirati games.

Al Shindagha Museum has a comprehensive education and public programme, with the Heritage Community Space a key highlight. Housed in the cluster of historic buildings at the edge of the museum, the space is focused on nurturing and safeguarding age-old cultural practices. Drop in and watch live demonstrations of local crafts such as pottery, fabric weaving and more. Academic research takes place here too.

Afterwards, stop by the Perfume House and discover the story behind Emirati fragrances. It highlights how scents played an integral role in the nation’s history with a legacy that still lives on today. Exhibits showcase traditional techniques and ingredients with photographs, special tools, educational videos and historical artefacts such as the late Sheikha Sheikha Bint Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum’s special perfume bottle. The intricately carved glass bottle contains a custom-made blend of fragrance oil from sandalwood and rose.

Breathing new life to one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, Al Shindagha Museum offers an inimitable glimpse into Dubai’s vibrant past.
