Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum's House

Visit history in this royal residence

Located in the historic Al Shindagha district near the end of Dubai Creek, the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House is one of the oldest buildings in the city and a piece of Dubai’s history.

This historic house was the official residence of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum – the ruler of Dubai from 1912 to 1958, and grandfather of the present ruler – His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

This is where the vision of Dubai was first dreamt, and where the current ruler played in the yard as a young boy. The house was constructed in 1896, before being transformed into one of the main features within the soon-to-open Shindagha museum.

While the naturally cooling wind towers offer a glimpse of traditional architecture, it’s really a window into Dubai’s past. The sweeping views of the Dubai skyline on the top floor give the entire experience a feeling of travelling through time.

You can find Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s house at Shindagha museum – located along Dubai Creek where life in Dubai first began.

The house is very attractive and it has been beatifully restored. The architecture is very beautiful and there were particularly beautiful wooden doors and windows.

We took a short taxi ride from the Dubai Museum to here as it was not on our bus route. We last visited in 2013 and were no less fascinated on this occasion. The house dates to 1896 and was the official residence of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum – the ruler of Dubai from 1912 to 1958, and grandfather of the present Sheikh. It is now incorporated into the Shindagha museum, a window into Dubai's past with its lovely architecture and large wind towers. It covers a large area and comprises many wings where the visitor can marvel at the collections of various artefacts including, coins, stamps, jewelry, lithographs, old documents and maps, plus many other items dating to previous centuries. I think we paid AED3 entrance fee but its free if you have the Dubai Pass

One of the most historic attraction at the Al Shindhaga Heritage Sites is the Shiekh Saeed Al Makhtoum House. With a grand and exquisite architecture of long alleyways, magnificent wooden doors, airy balconies and a large courtyard, the house was built just before the turn of the 20th century and carefully restored for the future. With four windtowers and four wings, the house is a museum of sorts with coins and stamps, ancient jewelry, artifacts, antiques, photos, dioramas and wooden ship models. This is definitely one of the attractions you should see when in Dubai.
