Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House

Visit history in this royal residence

Located in the historic Al Shindagha district near the end of Dubai Creek, the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House is one of the oldest buildings in the city and a piece of Dubai’s history.

This historic house was the official residence of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum – the ruler of Dubai from 1912 to 1958, and grandfather of the present ruler – His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

This is where the vision of Dubai was first dreamt, and where the current ruler played in the yard as a young boy.

The house was constructed in 1896, before being transformed into one of the main features within the soon-to-open Shindagha museum.

While the naturally cooling wind towers offer a glimpse of traditional architecture, it’s really a window into Dubai’s past. The sweeping views of the Dubai skyline on the top floor give the entire experience a feeling of travelling through time.

Find the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s house at Shindagha museum – located along Dubai Creek where life in Dubai first began.

Note: Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House is currently closed for renovation.

  • Cultural and historical
One of the most historic attraction at the Al Shindhaga Heritage Sites is the Shiekh Saeed Al Makhtoum House. With a grand and exquisite architecture of long alleyways, magnificent wooden doors, airy balconies and a large courtyard, the house was built just before the turn of the 20th century and carefully restored for the future. With four windtowers and four wings, the house is a museum of sorts with coins and stamps, ancient jewelry, artifacts, antiques, photos, dioramas and wooden ship models. This is definitely one of the attractions you should see when in Dubai.

  • Slow down in a fast paced city
This place takes you back the age where Dubai isnt kkow for its lavish buildings. The feeling is really different. The view of the creek, the dhows, birds, and people relaxes you. I love this place especially during the sunset. Great place to people watch and contemplate.

  • A treasure of heritage & culture
In my eyes, this museum is a must stop. My first visit was in 2007 and that propelled this subsequent visit. Students & connoisseur's of architecture will be pleasantly delighted. Charge your iphones, because you will be snapping away. The history of this Emirate is relived here. Full renovations are expected to be completed soon.
