One of Dubai’s most famous tourist landmarks, the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah often stands among the top five – if not the absolute peak – of the world’s most iconic hotels.

Since its opening in late 1999, the hotel with its distinctive sail-shaped silhouette, has thrust Dubai onto the global luxury tourism landscape. Built on a triangular man-made island reclaimed from the sea, the hotel and its billowing sail-like structure rise 321 metres above the sea, offering panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf.

Managed by Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts, the Burj Al Arab takes accepted standards of luxury to a new level. Guests have access to service on par with royalty and fine dining alike. Gold interiors, lush suites, the finest delicacies – Burj Al Arab’s long list of superlatives cannot be matched.

Take your pick from an underwater aquarium restaurant reached through a simulated submarine voyage, heralded by famed and award winning chef Nathan Outlaw, a fleet of Rolls-Royces on the forecourt and the famous helipad that has hosted the likes of Tiger Woods, Anthony Joshua and Roger Federer.

One of the best waterparks you’ll find anywhere in the world is the Wild Wadi Waterpark, a popular ticket at anytime of the year thanks to Dubai’s warm weather.

Sitting right on the shore of the city’s iconic Burj Al Arab, it’s a true Arabian water experience. Wild Wadi is themed around the tale of classic Arabian character Juha and offers a variety of pulsating rides, slides and activities for all ages.

If relaxation is your tonic, the gentle Wave Pool is a great way to rock away the day. Or, you can hire a private cabana for some quiet downtime at the Lazy River.

Kids will want to explore Juha’s Dhow and Lagoon, a giant playground offering a number of different slides. The giant tipping bucket is guaranteed to leave you drenched if you happen to be standing anywhere nearby.

For something with a bit more tempo and excitement, there are a number of speed slides to tempt you from your lounge chair.

Try your hand at the Flood River Flyer, or test your limits on the Jumeirah Sceirah. There’s also a surfing simulator to try and fight the water flow on a surfboard or bodyboard.

  • Honeymoon Treat!
My husband and I debated whether to visit the Burj Al Arab towards the end of our honeymoon for an evening of champagne and cocktails. Following discussion with a lovely couple at our hotel we opted in and were most definitely not disappointed! All staff very welcoming and polite. Views amazing! Champagne and cocktails lovely. We also decided to buy some nibbles which we both enjoyed. Our reservation was at 6pm. Perfect time to watch the sun set the following hour. Neither myself or my husband thought it was particularly expensive - drinks/champagne/cocktails same price as other restaurants/bars in Dubai. All in all a perfect evening at the SkyView Bar. Would definitely recommend.

  • Playing at it
After dinner in the hotel’s Arabic restaurant we decided upon cocktails with a view. The lady at reception asked us to wait a sec whilst she checked that they could accommodate us - I don’t know what the hold up was, there was plenty of empty seats when we arrived on the 27th floor. Playing at being exclusive I imagine. The alternative, futuristic decor made me feel like I was in a James Bond scene, especially when they kept referring to me by name although I’d never met them before. The view of the city scape by night looking towards Downtown was impressive and evocative - perfect whilst chatting and sipping on an expensive cocktail. Enjoy! Tip: the cheapest cocktail is around 125 AED(£25/$35)

  • Very average afternoon tea
I took my partner as a treat for afternoon tea. The price was high, however so were my expectations. On arrival at the hotel grounds, you are greeted by a quite brusuqe security team, who rather than have a list of those attending for an event, made me trawl through my emails to find the booking confirmation before allowing our car to pass. I completely understand the need for security, however I would expect something a little friendlier. The hotel lobby is very gaudy and perhaps a little dated - I'm sure the rooms are beautiful, however it does feel that the communal areas need a little makeover. You are escorted table by table into the lift to the Sky Bar - this seemed a little impersonal & not well organised - there were only a few seats for those waiting to go up - not what I would expect from a hotel of its calibre. On arrival, we had paid extra for a window table - I would not have been happy with anything else, as surely the point of going to the Sky Bar would be to enjoy the view..? The other tables without a window seat were tucked behind us & one person would always be facing away from the windown. The bar also seemed dated & the floor covering in parts was uneven. The afternoon tea menu was tired and stained & any optional extras were expensive. The overall food during the tea I'm sorry to say, was average. You are offered extra sandwiches, but don't need them as the last course, being the pastries and cakes was large. I did feel the quality of the cakes & pastries were poor - the scones were dry and dense, the cake was also dry & other items were just really really sweet without much flavour - in fact the atfernoon tea back at our own hotel was far better. We also had to ask pretty consistently for more tea - it was split over the table by the waiter at one point & there was no offer of a clean table cloth. Overall, it was an 'experience', but not one I would repeat. I did feel disappointed as I wanted my partner to be blown away by the experience - needless to say he was not. Such a shame that the hotel does not seem to live up to its own reputation.
