Whether you want to share your Dubai snaps on the go, use ride-hailing apps or get around the city using online maps, staying connected while on holiday is a priority.

While free Wi-Fi is available at most hotels in Dubai and in many public areas, you may still want to get a SIM card for your mobile phone to be able to enjoy uninterrupted internet access. International roaming charges can add up quickly so a local SIM is also better for making and receiving calls from family and friends, or arranging restaurant reservations and tours.

Getting a SIM card in Dubai is a quick and easy process. In 2019, an initiative was launched where all tourists over the age of 18 receive a complimentary Tourism SIM card from telecom operator du at immigration at Dubai International (DXB) Airport. GCC citizens and those holding a transit visa, visit visa or visa on arrival can take advantage of this offer and receive three minutes of talk time and 20MB mobile data for free. Travellers can then top up credits at a du kiosk in the airport arrivals area or Dubai Duty Free.

Other local operators – Etisalat and Virgin – also have kiosks at the airport offering prepaid SIM cards tailored specifically for tourists and business travellers with various options, offers and discounts on voice, data and text bundles.

You can also get a SIM card in the city from commercial centres and major shopping hubs like The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates where operator representatives are available to assist you in-person.

Visitor SIM cards are valid for 90 days and phone plans can be purchased either as voice and data bundles, as pay-as-you-go plans, or with the option to top-up credit using prepaid recharge cards.

When making calls, remember that mobile phone numbers in the UAE are 10 digits long and the country code for the UAE is +971. To call your UAE number from abroad, callers will need to dial 00971 and then your number.

You must be 18 years or above to register your SIM card, which requires your passport to be presented for identification along with a valid UAE tourist visa.

Once connected, visit the city's most photogenic spots for the perfect holiday backdrop or check out Dubai's latest attractions.
