There’s fashion and fun galore in Dubai this month
With the summer officially behind us, October is the time to explore Dubai. The city's most creative people find a way to express themselves on the catwalk. Art and culture lovers can introduce themselves to the Dubai Opera. New theme parks have thrills for the adventurous. Step this way...
From October 20-23, Dubai takes a fashionable turn with our cool Fashion Forward (FFWD) season. Top designers from the city and abroad, including Amato by Furne One and Hussein Bazaza, converge in the avenues of Dubai Design District (d3) to showcase the best of the region’s styles, from ready-to-wear to haute couture. This season also sees the launch of EPIC (Empowerment Program through Industry Collaboration), a program to boost regional talent through workshops, networking events and access to industry leaders.
Dubai Design Week
Head straight from the runways to the galleries of d3 for a weeklong celebration of design innovation. The six-day program (October 24-29) offers myriad workshops. Learn the art of lettering or facade lighting, try your hand at basic furniture design, listen to savvy professionals on discussion panels, or browse the many gallery openings, showrooms and pop-ups. It's all fine fodder for creatives - and free! But that's not all. In tandem is Downtown Design, an exhibition of interiors and furniture, offering talented designers the chance to connect with buyers.
Comics and pop culture come together at the first edition of POPCON, a festival dedicated to the genre. Hollywood stars from the likes of Marvel and Disney will make special appearances and take part in workshops during the three-day event (October 27-29). Children and adults are welcome, and everyone is encouraged to dress up as their favourite comic book character.
WALL ART WALKS
This month, take a stroll through some of the open air galleries popping up across the city. Dubai Walls, established earlier this year to coincide with the opening of of the expanded City Walk, features 15 international artists who have created street art installations using everything from stenciling and graffiti to sand art and knitting. The resulting work breathes new life into the heart of Dubai. A few roads down, the old shopping neighborhood of Karama has also recently undergone an art overhaul. Twenty-four walls were covered with murals and graffiti, giving it a colourful facelift and converting the space into another open-air street art gallery.
There are gadgets galore for tech enthusiasts as the autumn season of Gitex (October 1-8) brings bargains, bundle offers and major product launches around laptops, televisions, cameras and mobile phones. For more serious techies, there's also Gitex Technology Week (October 16-20), the region's top technology trade exhibition, where the who's who of the industry discusses the latest trends and emerging technologies.
OCTOBER AT THE OPERA
After a star-studded opening night featuring legendary tenor Placido Domingo, and a special September program of everything from ballet to classic performances, we move on to more cosmopolitan acts at the new multi-purpose Dubai Opera venue. Emirati singing superstar Hussain Al Jassmi delights an intimate audience on October 10. Singer songwriter James Morrison will, on October 7, be the first popular artist to perform at the venue. And another opera great, Jose Carreras, will celebrate his final world tour with a Dubai performance performance on October 4 and 8.
DUBAI PARKS AND RESORTS OPENING
Last, but not least … we’ll get a taste of Dubai’s much-awaited mega entertainment destination, Dubai Parks and Resorts, from October 31. Featuring not one, not two, but three theme parks and a water park, the complex is set to thrill. What’s on offer? You can get up-close with some of your favourite Hollywood action films at Motiongate, or be enthralled by interactive rides and dances at the world’s first Bollywood-themed amusement park, Bollywood Parks. And, to cap it off, we’ve got Legoland and Legoland Water Park, where the inner child in everyone is given full rein with 40 themed rides, including heart-stopping rollercoasters, rides, slides and plenty of splash fun.
