Dubai, which has long been a hub of diverse international entertainment, can now stake its claim as the comedy capital of the region. The city has fantastic venues drawing the biggest names in the business as well as a thriving local comedy scene. The Laughter Factory
Some of the most well-known comedians in the world have been brought to Dubai to perform at The Laughter Factory’s shows. Held at various locations across the city, Ross Noble, Michael Mcintyre, Russell Peters, Lee Mack, Adam Hills, Kevin Bridges, Frankie Boyle and Dara Ó Briain are just a few of the big-name comics who’ve entertained sell-out audiences courtesy of the comedy collective.
The pioneers of local comedy in the city, Dubomedy has been nurturing the scene for the past decade. Not only does the organisation arrange for various acts to perform in Dubai, but it also holds its own classes in everything from stand-up to sketches and improvisation, so there’s always room for budding amateurs to join the party. It also hosts popular events, including the Dubai International Comedy Carnival, Dubomedy International Performing Arts Festival and Improv Revolution.
This lively, welcoming spot at The Bonnington Jumeirah Lakes Towers hotel hosts regular comedy nights. Acts in the past have included Irish funnyman Jason Byrne and Whose Line is it Anyway? stars Stephen Frost, Andy Smart, Ian Coppinger and Steve Steen. The Courtyard Playhouse
If you’re into improv, this is the place to go. It’s Dubai’s first and only dedicated improvisational theatre, with a 70-seat auditorium near the Mall of the Emirates. Specialising in Johnstonian-inspired stand-up comedy and acting, it also broadcasts National Theatre Live, Royal Shakespeare Company Live, Kenneth Branagh Theatre Live and other internationally acclaimed productions every month.
The striking dhow-shaped Dubai Opera, which takes pride of place in Downtown Dubai, is the city’s leading performing arts and entertainment venue. Visitors can expect to experience it all here, including award-winning musicals, A-list concerts and laugh-out-loud comedy shows. Talented comedians who have performed at Dubai Opera include French superstar Gad Elmaleh, and British favourites, Al Murray, Prince Abdi and Esther Manito.
Dubai’s first and largest fully air-conditioned indoor performance venue has changed the face of entertainment in the region. The multi-purpose venue can seat an audience of 17,000, with brilliant views from every angle. It opened in June 2019 with an incredible show by stand up extraordinaire Russell Peters, who brought the house down with his tongue-in-cheek humour. Coca-Cola Arena has more laughs planned with a packed calendar of events all year round.
Dubai World Trade Centre
As one of the largest live venues in the city, Dubai World Trade Centre attracts the big names from around the world. British comics Al Murray, John Bishop and Michael McIntyre; Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges and Dara Ó Briain from Ireland are among the acts to have performed here. The venue is the region’s largest purpose-built complex for events and exhibitions, starting its life as the landmark 39-storey Sheikh Rashid Tower in the late 1970s before expanding.
